In June we saw the London Academy mentors and mentees attend their last
ReachOut project of the 2013 – 2014 academic year. The mentees enjoyed a variety of activities
during the final week, with each group beginning their project by celebrating
the achievements of mentees who had demonstrated ReachOut’s core values of
fairness, self-control, good judgement and staying power.
The year 8 & 9
girls had the chance to show off their culinary skills making eton mess whilst
the year 8 boys took part in a celebration evening with awards presented including
‘The ReachOut Award for Commitment and Attendance’
as well as ‘Most Improved Mentee on and
off the Pitch’.
I would like to
take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to all the mentors who have given
up their time to work with the Academy mentees this year. I have thoroughly
enjoyed the projects and seen great improvements in not only the mentees Maths
and English abilities but also their personal development. None of this would
have been possible without the dedication and commitment of the mentors who
have been there week after week so again, a massive thank you!
We haven’t lost
touch with the Academy mentees over the summer and have recently been on two
end of year celebration trips. The year 11 boys took part in a workshop hosted
by The Brokerage at the UBS offices
in Liverpool Street where they learnt all about working in The City. The boys
had a fantastic opportunity to gain an insight into the corporate world taking
part in mock interviews with UBS employees. This was followed by paintballing,
a great day!
The year 6 & 7
Academy mentees were lucky enough to take part in an exclusive computer coding
workshop at The Barbican Centre followed
by a tour of media company Bloomberg’s offices. After the tour, the group let
off some steam in a session of laser tag with the girls emerging victorious,
(of course)!
Overall a great end
to the Academy Programme! I look forward to getting stuck in again in
September.
