On April the 15th, ReachOut Manchester mentees and BNY Mellon employees gathered at BNY's Hardman Square offices to meet England and Arsenal legend Sol Campell, a man who is second only to Bobby Moore in having been the youngest captain of the English national team. Campbell had an illustrious career that saw him win premier league winners medals with Arsenal, and numerous league and FA cup trophies with Tottenham, Arsenal and Portsmouth.
Campbell gave a talk documenting his rise from humble beginnings in a disadvantaged area of East London to world football superstar. He documented the attitude, character and gusto that one needs to reach ones potential. To aspiring young people he said:
"There is no secret to success, it is very simple. You have to work hard - as hard as you can. You have to look up to and learn from others, who are good examples. You have to see the world without restrictions. And you have to have self-belief.
"You must also realise your weaknesses, and understand you will always need others to help you to achieve anything. We are a human race and must work together to achieve a great deal. Everyone should be able to succeed, and success not limited to the few, or gained through secret means. It is there to grasp for all who want it enough."
We couldn't agree more!
