The London ReachOut Cup 2014

On Friday 11 April, eight teams battled it out in our annual ReachOut Cup football tournament fundraiser, raising over £4,000 for our mentoring projects in Hackney, Camden and Tower Hamlets.

A group of ReachOut mentees spent two days preparing the tournament, working closely with our team in London to make sure that everything from trophies and equipment to refreshments and tournament rules were sorted. They also took the lead in running the event, gaining vital communication and teamwork skills by meeting and greeting teams, keeping track of scores and conducting an official presentation ceremony at the end of the tournament.

“I felt very proud,” said ReachOut mentee, Holly, who helped to organise the event.

In the week leading up to the tournament, Holly and her friends scoured local supermarkets, asking for donations of drinks and snacks for the footballers, and travelled to trophy shops to purchase medals for the competitors. In the process, Holly and her friends got plenty of practice at negotiating and bartering with retailers – a useful skill for anyone of any age to develop!

Teams from Barclays, Bloomberg, MetroBank and Shell made it through to the semis and, after a nail-biting final, Bloomberg emerged victorious, beating newcomers, Barclays, to claim the ReachOut Cup for the fifth year in a row – congratulations, Bloomberg!

Thank you to all who entered a team (Bloomberg, Barclays, UBS, Macquarie, MetroBank, Shell and Oliver Wyman) and Tesco and Sainsburys who donated refreshments.

Looking forward to seeing you all next year!

ReachOut mentees meet previous England captain Sol Campbell

On April the 15th, ReachOut Manchester mentees and BNY Mellon employees gathered at BNY's Hardman Square offices to meet England and Arsenal legend Sol Campell, a man who is second only to Bobby Moore in having been the youngest captain of the English national team. Campbell had an illustrious career that saw him win premier league winners medals with Arsenal, and numerous league and FA cup trophies with Tottenham, Arsenal and Portsmouth.

Campbell gave a talk documenting his rise from humble beginnings in a disadvantaged area of East London to world football superstar. He documented the attitude, character and gusto that one needs to reach ones potential. To aspiring young people he said:

"There is no secret to success, it is very simple. You have to work hard - as hard as you can. You have to look up to and learn from others, who are good examples. You have to see the world without restrictions. And you have to have self-belief.

"You must also realise your weaknesses, and understand you will always need others to help you to achieve anything. We are a human race and must work together to achieve a great deal. Everyone should be able to succeed, and success not limited to the few, or gained through secret means. It is there to grasp for all who want it enough."

We couldn't agree more!

Kingsley Napley Charity Day

Thanks to the staff at Kingsley Napley law firm who hosted a Charity Day Fun Fair fundraiser at their offices in Farringdon last Friday.  Staff took part in cactus hoopla, bowling, connect four and more to raise funds for ReachOut.

Most popular were the pick'n'mix stall and beat the buzzer which brought out the competitive nature of the staff who were all determined to win the coveted prize - Hamish the bear!

Thanks to everyone for taking part! Check out the photos below:

Table football - this is serious stuff!

Yellow - "I'll just pop this one in here." Green - "Oh man I lost already."
